Given that the Big XII is spread out, it makes sense for that
conference to do it too. Given that the Big Ten has a lot of rivalries, I could see them go with the protected 3 + 5 X 5 model. Things could get a little tricky for some of the schools as far as which 3 teams end up being in their protected 3. At least there is a good chance some of the schools end up with 1 team that doesn't seem to belong to the protected 3 group. For example, UMD, Penn State, and Rutgers will make up 2 of the 3 teams for those 3 teams, but who ends up being the third team? Does Penn State get Ohio State or Michigan State because both seem like logical candidates. Whereas UMD and Rutgers really don't have any logical candidates.
